Faan AND Linda Grobler

Artists for Conservation

The couple met at an art exhibition, already being skilled artists at the time. Coincidentally, they both worked in oil on canvas – as they still prefer to today, after 37 years of marriage.

Although complete individuals in both their personalities and art, they have, in certain respects, sometimes worked as a team through the years. Not in the sense of influencing, but rather inspiring each other.

Faan has the uncanny ability to create bushveld landscapes largely from memory. He has a special affinity for a lone elephant bull – often depicted against a hazy backdrop, skillfully highlighted by a gently filtering sun.

The scenery will sometimes be subtly interrupted by a thorn tree or faraway sloping hills. His mood can also take him to harsher territory – sun-scorched cracked soil; an imposing Baobab; a curving dirt road tracking through thick sand.

An unsuspecting spectator can easily be transported to a stirring view of migrating antelope, enveloped in dust, a herd of grazing buffalo on rich plains, or simply Africa in it’s fullness under a glowering, thundery sky.

Through the years, Linda has virtually perfected her photo-realistic style.

This contrast to her husband’s style undoubtedly sprouts from a more perfectionistic, puritan soul. But look closer, and see the love and dedication invested in each of her beloved big cats.

Exquisitely executed, one can almost reach out and touch a slumbering leopard draped over a branch, or experience awe and respect at the sight of a dark-maned lion, staring at you with amber eyes, every whisker and scar and rippling muscle perfectly proportioned and real.

Faan and Linda have been commissioned by Pilanesberg Nature Reserve (located near Sun City), where of course the Big Five can be found. Also to their credit, they are both well-known in South Africa and have sold paintings in Holland, England and the United States.

They remain intensely dedicated to their art. “For talent will not be kept silent.”

The only thing for a creative artist to do, is to do his chosen work
